August 15th - Signs by Jennifer

Meet Jennifer Abbott who makes some of our signs. Jennifer's signs are handmade and each sign has its own individual flair. Stop by soon to check out some of her pieces. Chances are you'll fall in love.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I work full time as an assistant store manager for a grocery chain. When I'm not working I enjoy my time at home, woodworking, making signs, my dogs. Any chance I get I'm at the track supporting my fiancé who drag races motorcycles.

What inspired you to start making signs? How long have you been making them?

I am always looking for new things to try or to make and seven years ago I read an article on Pinterest about making wood signs, that was the beginning for me. It's a hobby that never gets old, there are always new paint techniques to try, different types of wood to use, and so many different options on what to paint on each one. No two signs ever come out the same.

What’s your favorite part about making signs?

Making signs is a bit of a stress reliever for me. It's my "me time".  I love starting with a blank piece of wood and watching it turn into something that I'm proud to say I made.

Tell us a little bit about the process.

I start with a raw piece of wood, sand it down to a smooth service, pick a color scheme and decide whether I want it to look new, old or if I just want to stain it and show the beautiful grain in the wood. If I want the sign to look old once I paint the sign I sand it down until some of the raw wood shows through, then I decide what I want to paint on the sign and whether I want to use a stencil, print a picture and trace or hand paint, once the sign is complete I spray it with a clear enamel or a clear coat of wax.

Why did you choose Olde Town Consign to sell your signs?

I chose Olde Town because its a collection of everything I love and the atmosphere there is always so welcoming. I adore Hope and the entire staff. They are always so very friendly!

Do you have any plans for the future? Upcoming new products, things you’re working on, etc.?

I want to get back into making wood furniture such as accent tables, benches and anything else I can find a plan for that I think I can tackle and of course I definitely want to make more new signs!

Is there anything else you want readers to know?

Don't ever think you can't do something...I never would have thought I'd be good with power tools or painting for that matter but it turns out its all something I truly enjoy and I'm always looking forward to my next project!!
